Ausstellung: Prototyp - Personen.Kraft.Wagen

Heute hat eine neue Austellung in Hamburg eröffnet: Prototyp - eine Autosammlung. Zu sehen gibt es eine ganze Reihe alter Autos, vornehmlich Sportwagen.


Die Sammlung ist sehr liebevoll angeordnet. Die Autos sind in hervorragendem Zustand, viele der Wagen haben sogar noch eine Straßenzulassung. Autofans sollte für die Austellung Platz in ihrem Terminkalender finden. Heute am Eröffnungstag ist der Eintritt sogar kostenlos.
Eine weitere Beschreibung gibt es bei Spiegel Online, daher fasse ich mich hier ganz kurz.

Vista: Local performance record broken

Some while ago I published at my office door a screenshot showing a file copy dialog of Windows Vista copying from local drive C: to local drive D: the number of 11229 files with a total size of 4.22 GB. The approximate time for copying was specified as 11 days and 13 hours.

Now my record was broken by a colleague. He published the screenshot of a file copy dialog of Windows Vista with 1 file, 249 MB from local drive D: to local drive C:. Time for this tremendous work: 49547 days and 4 hours.

It will get hard for me to overtrump this. :-)

Buch: Glenkill

Ich habe im Urlaub das Buch Glenkill von Leonie Swann gelesen. Bücher, die man selber verschenkt, sollte man ja irgendwann auch mal selber lesen. Eine Schafsherde stellt eines Morgens fest, dass ihr Schäfer ermordet auf der Wiese liegt. Das Buch beschreibt aus Sicht der Schafe wie diese einmütig Gerechtigkeit fordern, denn das sind sie ihrem Schäfer schuldig. Also beginnen sie zu ermitteln. Geprägt werden die Ermittlungen von der der Schafe eigenen Sicht der Welt, ihren Befürchtungen und Interessen. Vielleicht war der Metzger der Mörder, vor dem sich alle Schafe fürchten, weil er nach Tod riecht? Ihm wäre das zuzutrauen. Und auch dieser sogenannte Gott ist sehr verdächtig. Die weiteren Ermittlungen decken nach und nach immer mehr Geheimnisse der Menschenwelt auf, bis am Ende die Schafe alles aufklären. Zwar ist das Ende vielleicht ein bisschen übertrieben, aber das Buch ist insgesamt auf jeden Fall einen Blick wert. Die Erzählweise von Leonie Swann ist kurzweilig und schildert den Blick der Schafe auf die Welt in einer sehr unterhaltsamen Art und Weise. Dabei ist die Geschichte überaus witzig geschrieben, das zeigt allein schon der Dialog ganz am Anfang des Buches: "Gestern war er noch gesund." "Das sagt gar nichts; er ist ja nicht an einer Krankheit gestorben. Spaten sind keine Krankheit." Zu Recht ist das Buch seit vielen Wochen auf den Bestsellerlisten und auch ich kann es nur rundheraus empfehlen.

Remote Desktop Connection and multiple monitors

So, I will start with some useful info about Remote Desktop Connection on computers using two monitors. Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection application (mstsc.exe) is a very handy tool to connect and work on servers, development or virtual machines from your desktop computer. In the latest version coming with Vista, but also available for XP, it supports at last desktop machines with two monitors .

If you start MSTSC the gui opens, but the configuration options do not allow to configure for multiple monitors. The screen resolution can be specified just matching to monitor 1 of your desktop. The connected remote desktop will be shown and in window mode the window can be moved anywhere on monitor 1 and 2. The window cannot be resized to use both monitors jointly. In fullscreen mode it will be shown just on monitor 1. To use the new multiscreen support you have to specify the parameter /span on the command line when starting the application! Then you can use both monitors, but just in fullscreen mode (you cannot specify another resolution).

Unfortunately to span across monitors, the monitors must all have the same height. I favor to use my two 19" monitors one vertically with 1024 x 1280 for texts and one horinzontally with 1280 x 1024 for presentations. Using the /span parameter of MSTSC shows a screen of 2304 x 1280 using both monitors; resolution cannot be changed. So, some part of the remote desktop is not accessible or just by scrolling. This is very awful. The /span feature is inapplicable for a configuration where monitors do not have the same height. But there is an easy to use solution. Instead of specifying the /span parameter on the command line, you can send parameters for width and height. By this you can define large resolutions and the remote desktop will appear with this resolution. You just have to do one thing: After connecting the remote desktop, you must change from fullscreen to window mode and resize the window to its full size. The window will have a title bar, but this is no problem, since you can specify any resultion (even resultions normally not supported like 2000 x 500). For my configuration I use the parameters /w:2300 /h:990 and this uses my two monitors at the best.
