Ich hatte letztens einen Mietwagen bei Avis angemietet und bin mit dem Service von Avis nicht zufrieden. Der Wagen selbst und die lokale Avis-Station in Hamburg-Harburg waren einwandfrei, nur die Zentrale von Avis völlig inakzeptabel. Es fing damit an, dass auf der Webseite die Buchung fehlschlug, wenn der Flughafen Düsseldorf-Weeze als Abgabestation angewählt wurde. Also habe ich per Telefon angerufen. Der Kundenbetreuer meinte, dass vor Kurzem der europäische Webauftritt geändert wurde und einige Stationen noch nicht richtig funktionieren. Na gut, mir sollte es gleich sein, ich habe dann eben per Telefon meinen Wagen gebucht. Tags darauf rief die lokale Avis-Station an, weil sie 4 Buchungen im System vorgefunden hatten und baten um Rückruf, ob das korrekt sei. Das war sehr guter Service des lokalen Avis-Vertreters. leider konnte er keine von den Buchungen im System stornieren, daher habe ich wieder die Zentrale von Avis anrufen müssen. Diese sagten zu, dass sie 3 der 4 Buchungen stornieren, damit das Geld nicht 4-mal abgebucht wird. Und was sehe ich nach meinem Urlaub? 4 Abbuchungen von Avis. Also habe ich wieder angerufen. Meine 3 überflüssigen Buchungen wurden offensichtlich wie telefonisch vereinbart storniert. Nur wurde trotzdem das Geld abgebucht. Aber nicht, dass sie Ihren Fehler einsehen, sich entschuldigen und schnellstmöglich das Geld erstatten. Jetzt soll ich erst eine Kopie meiner Kreditkartenabrechnung einreichen, bevor eine Erstattung möglich ist. Die Autos bei Avis und die Filialen vor Ort mögen gut sein, aber im Konzern scheint mehr als nur der Webauftritt verbesserungswürdig zu sein.
Tipp: Bei der Konkurrenz kann man sogar kostenfrei mittels Skype anrufen.

Windows Mobile beats Windows Vista
Yesterday I had a transfer time at Istanbul Airport of more than 5 hours. As I got bored in a coffee bar after a while, I got out my mobile phone. The HTC Touch running Windows Mobile 6 was not fully recharged, because I played already Sudokus. I switched on Wifi, selected the available free_internet network and started reading news. I downloaded Google Maps mobile and I love it. I downloaded Skype mobile and Agile Instant Messenger. Unfortunately the last one needs a PC for installation. So I started my Asus V2Je notebook running Windows Vista Business. But I could not install the instant messenger, because Vista is not supported. But I continued surfing with mobile phone and notebook in parallel. The notebook was completely recharged and running in battery saving mode, but the result was disappointing. With Vista it was more intricate to setup the Wifi connection and get started, it seems to be slower during surfing the web and its battery was empty long before my flight started. The mobile phone required no recharge until today. Maybe the test was not fair, but for my subjective view the Windows Mobile devices beated the Windows Vista device.

Lange der Nacht der Museen 2007 in Hamburg
Am Wochenende fand wieder die lange Nacht der Museen in Hamburg statt. Und natürlich war das wieder ein Muss. Besonders viele Museen haben wir diesmal nicht besucht. Das Helms-Museum in Harburg war - wie jedes Jahr - eines der Highlights, denn die Mitarbeiter dort geben sich unheimlich viel Mühe und bieten eines der schönsten Programme zur dieser Nacht an. Es gab verschiedene Aktionen zum Mitmachen, Musik auf alten Instrumenten wie z.B. Luren und zur Verköstigung gab es selbstgemachte Gerichte nach alten Rezepten, z.B. Met und Rosenwein selbst hergestellt nach originalen Rezepturen. Aber man geht ja nicht nur zur Unterhaltung dahin. Als Sonderausstellung werden zur Zeit Scherenschnitte des Scherenschneiders Nolden gezeigt. Eigentlich hatte mich das vom Thema her nicht so angesprochen, aber wo man schon mal da war ... Ich bin froh, dass ich das nicht verpasst habe. Die Scherenschnitte sind sehr beeindruckend, teilweise sehr verwinkelt mit hauchdünnen Strukturen. Wahnsinnig beeindruckend - wenn ich so etwas herstellen müsste, dann könnte man mich nach 2 Stunden in die Klapsmühle einweisen.
Später haben wir noch das Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte (oder 'hamburgmuseum' wie es sich jetzt nennt) besucht. Das ist eines der größten und auch schönsten Museen Hamburg und man hat sich dort auch viel Mühe mit der Ausstellung gegeben. Das Museum ist immer einen Besuch wert. Nur für die lange Nacht der Museen hat man sich wenig extra Mühe gemacht. Es gab ein paar Musiker die live gespielt haben und einen Kaffee- und einen Getränkestand im Innenhof, der aber schon um 23:30 Uhr kein Bier mehr hatte. Wir sind dann hungrig und durstig on dannen gezogen. Hier sollte offensichtlich das Museum mehr für sich selber sprechen, aber die Ausstellung kann das auch gut.
Da die Karten der langen Nacht auch am nächsten Tag noch gültig sind, konnten wir noch die Deichtorhallen besuchen. Dort gab es eine Austellung von Erwin Wurm. Moderne Kunst mit der ich nicht viel anfangen konnte. Ein Beispiel der Ausstellung ist ein rosa Brett mit der Aufschrift, dass man den Kopf auf das Brett pressen und an Adorno denken soll. Ich habe an etwas anderes gedacht: nämlich, dass ich froh bin, dafür keinen Eintritt gezahlt zu haben. Aber vielleicht bin ich ja auch nur ein Kunstbanause, der so etwas nicht versteht. Zum Glück gehört zu den Deichtorhallen auch das Haus der Fotografie, das mit teilweise sehr tollen Fotos gänzlich wieder entschädigt hat.
Zum Abschluss haben wir erst das naheliegende Zollmuseum besucht, dass einen schönen Einblick in die Arbeit des Zolls gibt. Man erfährt über die Geschichte, welche Aufgaben der Zoll hat, wie er arbeitet und mit welchem Aufwand gegen ihn gearbeitet wird. Und zuletzt gibg es noch in das Speicherstadtmuseum, das sich mit der Geschichte und der Arbeit in der Speicherstadt beschäftigt. Das schöne hier, dass es ein Museum zum Anfassen ist. Man kann alles in die Hand nehmen, dran riechen etc. Dazu ist es sehr stimmungsvoll aufgemacht und passend auf zwei alten Speicherböden in der Speicherstadt beheimatet.

HP only with Vista
The Pavilion desktop computers from HP are just planned for the use with Windows Vista. I have a new Pavilion t3757.de with a preinstalled Windows Vista Home Premium. Installed was a lot of undesirable software (yahoo, ebay, ...).
Since the end user will be a not very well versed user in computer usage, but has a lot of special requirements in hard- wand software (video conferences, fax, scanners, printers, ...), is is planned to use Windows XP. The user is used to it and all soft- and hardware is known to be working. But - surprise - there are no drivers for the new pavilion for XP. Contacting HP support 2 times, they send links to various drivers, but mostly not working. They recommend to use Windows Vista. They say: "Unser Support umfasst jedoch nur das ausgelieferte System; also das vorinstallierte Windows Vista." (Our support comprises only the delivered system; so the preinstalled Windows Vista.)
We can summarize: If you buy HP, then use Vista or die.
Addendum: The same problem comes with new Fujitsu-Siemens systems.

My first steps in Vista - advice to wait some longer
It took Microsoft more than 5 years to publish a new version of Windows. According to this long time the expectations are quite high. Since one day I have installed Vista and try to get familiar with it. Does it meet my expectations or is it more disappointing? Let's have a look.
On my computer I had two windows installations of XP in different partitions and I planned to use one partition for Vista. The installation is quite easy and fast. I was just a little bit surprised, that I did not see a menu to format the partition. Instead I selected the the partition and it started to copy files and informed me, that the old installation will be moved to a folder windows.old. No problem, I can delete this folder manually. Formatting would just give me a better feeling to have a clean system without old garbage. Maybe I missed a button for formatting, nobody is reading texts like license aggrements, explaination and so on.
After installation I can see the first time the new look of Windows. Looks nice. A window opens without a title, in the address bar it identifies as 'System and Maintenance > Welcome Center'. It identifies my computer correctly as a Windows Vista Business with Core2Duo processor, 2 GB Ram and NVIDIA Geforce 7900 graphics card. Below this information block some icons offer actions what to do. Ok, lets add a new user. So I click on 'Add new user'. One would expect a window to add a new user. But no, just the imformation block above informa me, that user can have accounts and that it is useful. Hmmm, looks like they changed the professional version to behave like home version. But there is also a link for adding users now. After clicking on it I can - no, not add a new user. I can select between User Accounts and Cardspace. There is a tiny link under the heading user accounts quite right beside the other links, which says 'Add or remove user accounts'. Don't click on the heading 'User Accounts', because then you just can manage your user account. Ok, let's use the tiny link to add a user account finally. Oh, what is that? A meesage box opens, User Account Control asks for permission and I have to click on Continue. The message box is not only a modal dialog, it blocks the complete user interface. You cannot switch to other applications. After confirming with continue I still cannot add a user, but I see a list of existing user accounts and find a link to create a new user account. Then finally I can add a name and select it to be a standard user or administrator. After creation you can select the account and add a password. Phew! How many clicks it took to create the user? Feels like 22 or more.
This was just one example how intricate navigation got. For many actions it need 2 or 3 confirmations before it is executed. An example is the new sidebar where you can add gadgets on a transparent bar at the right. You can select online new gadgetsm but it needs 4 confirmations to add one to your bar. On my Google homepage I can do similiar with 1 click. I think I will switch of the User Account Control and look for new management tools to come to get rid of this annoying lack of usability.
Luckily I have for my productive work still some computers running XP. I tried to access by Remote Desktop Connection. It works as before - mostly. If you share your local drives and your clipboard this may work or not. Often not all drives as mapped or you get an error message when trying to copy data. One error was: 'Could not find this item. This is no longer located in \folder. Verify the item's location and try again.' Sounds reasonable, but is just an error in the Remote Desktop copy routines. But you can avoid this problem by opening a file share and connect to this.
After copying I tried to connect with Vista IE7 to my Exchange server using Outlook Web Access. The certificate is fine, but my organisation not listed as trustworthy. So it recommends not to connect. But I connected anyhow and after login I can read my emails. Surprisingly you cannot create a new mail. In the new mail window you cannot enter any text. Surprisingly does it work with XP IE7, with Vista IE7 it does not.
And more applications are not vista-enabled. Most antivirus programs are not yet working, Vista claims VMWare Workstation to be incompatible, but more funny is that several of Microsoft's own software is not working with Vista. 'Windows Vista does not support Visual Studio 2005' you will see when trying to install. If you install anyhow, only parts are installed successfully. And MS SQL erver is not supported on Vista and so on.
Some hardware is still missing drivers, like my Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS TV card, but I will not claim Microsoft for that.
What I really miss are the Toggle Keys. There is the option to switch on the Toggle keys, so that you hear a sound when hitting CAPS LOCK. But it is not working. So sound is played.
But not all is bad in Vista. The switch between applications by+ is done by a 3D effect to skim through all applications fast. This is not just really cool, it is also very useful and much better than - in XP. Also the Speech Recognition to control Windows is nice - and it works.
Summary:
After 5 years of development the new Windows does not show big innovations at the first glance. Really interesting things like .NET 3.0 are not unique to Vista, they are available for XP too. As noticed, there are still many compatibility problems with Hardware and Software and usability could be improved. So I recommend not to use Vista in a productive environment right now.
